In Italy, Orzo pasta comes under different names but they all refer to small barley (orzo) or rice-grain shaped pasta. Ours is called Rosemarino and is made from quality durum wheat which holds its texture and firmness perfectly while cooking (particularly important with Orzo pasta otherwise you might end up with a gooey mess!).
Orzo pasta is one of the most popular shapes for soups and, because of its size and texture, is excellent as a base for healthy meals for babies and young children - try it mixed with pureéd veg. or in a broth.
Its booming popularity has enticed chefs around the world to experiment with Orzo pasta and a splendid array of new dishes have emerged. Try it as a fast alternative to Arborio in risottos, as a filler for stuffed vegetables. It holds its own in casseroles and baked dishes and makes a splendid base for all kinds of warm and cold salads.
Its different, its fun and its versatile, and that's what makes it so popular.
